Prenatal Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Toronto

Prepare for pregnancy, birth, and recovery with confidence.

Pregnancy begins changing your body long before labour.

Prenatal pelvic floor physiotherapy helps you understand those changes, prepare for birth, and support your recovery, whether you’re experiencing symptoms or simply want to feel informed, prepared, and connected to your body.

At kāer, we believe pelvic floor physiotherapy should be a routine part of prenatal care, not something women discover only after problems begin.

Pregnant

Most women aren’t told this.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is often introduced only after symptoms appear.

After leaking. After pain. After birth.

But caring for your pelvic floor isn’t simply about treating problems. It’s about preparing your body before it needs to do one of the most physically demanding things it will ever do.

Understanding how your breathing, abdominal wall, and pelvic floor work together can help you move more comfortably during pregnancy, prepare more confidently for birth, and recover more intentionally afterward.

Do I need prenatal pelvic floor physiotherapy?

If you’re pregnant… probably.

Not because something is wrong. Because your body is changing.

Prenatal pelvic floor physiotherapy isn’t only for women experiencing pain or leaking. It’s for women who want to understand their bodies, prepare for birth, and support recovery before symptoms become the reason they seek care.

You may benefit if you:

  • are pregnant with your first baby
  • are pregnant again
  • have pelvic, hip, or low back pain
  • leak urine when coughing, sneezing, or exercising
  • feel pressure or heaviness
  • are planning a vaginal birth
  • are planning a Caesarean birth
  • simply want to feel more prepared

Our role isn’t simply to treat symptoms. It’s to help you understand how your body is responding to pregnancy, and how to support it through every stage.

Pelvic

When should I start prenatal pelvic floor physiotherapy?

One of the most common questions we hear is, “When should I come?”

For most women, we recommend beginning with a Pelvic Floor Assessment between 12 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. By this stage, your body has begun adapting to pregnancy, yet there is still plenty of time to build strength, improve coordination, learn to release your pelvic floor, and prepare for the months ahead.

That said, there is no perfect time. Whether you’re six weeks pregnant, thirty-six weeks pregnant, or already postpartum, we’ll meet you where you are. Appointments are available at our Leslieville clinic, serving East Toronto and the Beaches.

Because every pregnancy is different. Your care should be too.

Your Prenatal Pelvic Health Roadmap

Pregnancy isn’t one appointment. It’s a progression.

Your body changes. Your needs change. Your care should change too.

That’s why we’ve created the kāer Prenatal Pelvic Health Roadmap, a guide to help you understand what to expect, when to seek care, and how we’ll support you from early pregnancy through postpartum.

Not sure where you are? We’ll help you determine the right next step.

What happens during your first prenatal pelvic floor assessment?

For many women, this is the biggest unknown.

Your first appointment isn’t about jumping straight into treatment. It’s about understanding your body.

We’ll begin with a conversation about your pregnancy, your health history, your goals, and any symptoms or concerns you may have. Whether you’re experiencing discomfort or simply want to prepare for birth, your physiotherapist will tailor the appointment to you.

Depending on your stage of pregnancy and your individual needs, your assessment may include:

  • Breathing and pressure management
  • Posture and movement
  • Abdominal wall function
  • Core coordination
  • Pelvic floor assessment
  •

If an internal pelvic floor assessment is appropriate, your physiotherapist will explain why it may be helpful, answer any questions, and only proceed with your informed consent. Internal assessment is never required and is only one part of a comprehensive evaluation.

Before you leave, you’ll have a clearer understanding of how your body is functioning, along with a personalized plan designed specifically for your pregnancy.

Build pelvic floor strength through every trimester.

Your body continues changing throughout pregnancy. Your care should evolve with it.

After your assessment, we’ll recommend the follow-up schedule that’s right for you. For some women, that may mean one or two additional appointments. For others, ongoing support throughout pregnancy may be beneficial.

Together, we’ll help you:

  • Build strength where it’s needed
  • Learn how to fully release your pelvic floor
  • Improve breathing and pressure management
  • Reduce strain on your abdominal wall
  • Adapt as your pregnancy progresses

A personalized home program

Every assessment includes recommendations designed specifically for your body. Rather than following a generic pregnancy exercise program, you’ll leave with exercises and strategies tailored to your goals, symptoms, and stage of pregnancy.

Need extra support?

Knowing what to do is one thing. Finding time, and confidence, to do it consistently is another.

For women who would benefit from additional guidance, Physiotherapy Assistant sessions provide the opportunity to practise your personalized exercise program in the clinic under your physiotherapist’s treatment plan and ongoing supervision. It’s another way we help turn knowledge into lasting progress.

Prepare for birth.

Birth can’t be scripted. Preparation can.

Around 34 to 40 weeks, your focus naturally shifts toward labour and delivery. This is the ideal time for a Prepare to Push appointment. Together, we’ll help you understand how your body works during labour and teach practical strategies you can use on the day you give birth.

Your appointment may include:

  • Breathing techniques
  • Pelvic floor relaxation
  • Effective pushing strategies
  • Labour and birth positions
  • Partner support techniques
  • Comfort measures
  • Perineal massage education, when appropriate

Whether you’re planning a vaginal birth or a Caesarean birth, understanding your body before labour begins can help you feel calmer, more prepared, and more confident.

Postpartum recovery deserves a plan, too.

Pregnancy doesn’t end when your baby is born. Neither should your care.

Around 6 to 12 weeks postpartum, we’ll reassess how your body is healing and help you transition safely into the next stage of recovery.

Your postpartum assessment may include:

  • Pelvic floor recovery
  • Abdominal wall function
  • Diastasis recti assessment
  • Scar mobility, when applicable
  • Return-to-exercise planning
  • Ongoing symptoms, including leaking, pressure, or pain

Recovery looks different for every woman. Whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or a Caesarean birth, we’re here to help you reconnect with your body and return to movement with confidence.
